Cleaning Your Jewelry at Home

Purchasing a precious piece of Jewelry is an investment and like a piece of art, maintenance cleaning & proper storage can extend the enjoyment of wear & life of your piece.

A Simple Guide to Maintaining the Sparkle in your Jewelry

  • The easiest way to maintain your jewelry pieces at home is with a gentle lather of mild soap, warm water & a soft tooth brush. For example, Buttery body lotion (I am so guilty of this…..!) absolutely loves to glide on skin and jewelry. So a routine rinse with mild soap is enough to keep your pieces clean
  • Rings, especially when worn daily can accumulate quite a bit of build up on the finger and can often times cause irritation to the skin. Giving the ring a little extra brushing on the underside of the ring, the area closest to the skin will loosen up any buildup of product over time.
  • After the soap, gently rinse your pieces in a bowl of warm water, set aside and pat dry with a paper towel
  • We encourage you to use your Jewelry cloth that comes with your piece. The cloth has a light polishing compound and will give gold, silver and platinum a beautiful shine. Use the cloth by rubbing it gently in a circular motion back and forth on the metal and then using the outside layer for a final clean.
  • Just like a healthy skin routine that includes removing makeup before heading to bed, it’s a good idea to take off your jewelry as well! Not that gold won’t keep you warm at night, but pendants, earrings, and especially chains have a way of playfully moving around, which could mean they might get caught in your hair or snagged. Storing your jewelry at your bedside, in a jewelry box, or in a travel jewelry case can keep everything organized and ready for the next wear!

We usually recommend bringing your pieces in to a Jeweler to check the prongs and settings every six months to a year. Engagement rings and wedding bands with stones get alot more wear on a day to day basis . If you have rings that are 14k or 18k white gold, a rhodium plating can also be done as the normal wear of the natural yellow gold can begin to show through. If you notice any deep scratches on the surface of the metal (we mostly see this on the bottom outside of rings) a deeper polish on a buffing wheel can help restore the surface of the piece.

Cleaning in an ultra-sonic machine, cleaning sloution & steam is a complimentary service provided at a Jewelry store.

The general rule to avoid ultra-sonic machines for cleaning is with softer, porous stones such as Opals, Turquoise , Coral and Pearls.
